It’s been a while since I’ve done a deep dive into product ingredients.  I thought I would take a new approach to educating you about safer beauty options by also sharing some great products to try.  This way, you learn a little on why you should avoid these harmful items and have replacements. Today, we’re going to talk about phthalates, which is a mouthful. But something we should all have on our radar and why going Phthalate free is in your best interest.

What are Phthalates?

These chemicals, known as plasticizers, are used to make plastics more flexible and less breakable. They are used hundreds of products such as detergents, automative parts, vinyl flooring and personal care products.  Phthalates help fragrances and perfumes adhere to skin. These chemicals can also be found in high-fat foods like meat and cheese {think of a McDonald’s cheeseburger}.

According to the CDC’s fact sheet,  researchers found measurable levels in the general US population and concludes phthalate exposure is widespread.  Additionally, women have higher levels of these chemicals due to our use of shampoos, cosmetics, skincare, body lotion, you name it.

Are Products with Phthalates Harmful?

Phthalates disrupt the endocrine system and may cause birth defects.  Additionally, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued an opinion that pregnant women should be informed of the dangers of environmental toxins like phthalates.

Anything Else I Should Know About Phthalates ?

Many products have started calling out PHTHALATE-FREE on their labels.  This is a great start, but be cautious.  As I mentioned, phthalates are found in fragrance and perfumes.  As these are considered proprietary information, there is no legal requirement to divulge what that fragrance is made of.  Therefore, the recommendation is to look for “Fragrance-Free” or “Without Synthetic Fragrance” {naturally scented, like the citrus scent from an orange peel is ok}.  Also to note, heads up on Sephora’s Clean Seal.  Yes, these products meet the requirement of no added phthalates, but the fine print is “less than 1% of synthetic fragrance”. Read: hidden plasticizers.

So with that, here are 10 skincare products to use that are Phthalate and Synthetic Fragrance Free.

{Please note: As the information infers, these are less toxic options for pregnant and nursing women.  But remember, I’m a blogger with a beauty background, not a medical expert.  Share this post with your OB and get her expert advice.}
