Last month, we had an amazing winter family photo session with our good friend Eunice Kim. To be honest, we originally scheduled this for late September. I thought the house would be complete but I just didn’t feel ready. I kept pushing it back and finally committed to the weekend after our trip to the Bahamas. This was my first winter family photo session and thought having a little glow would help.
After seeing these pictures, I cannot believe I shied away from a winter session for so long! My goal was to capture moments in our new home with the plans of creating a gallery wall in the upstairs hallway. Just beautiful images of us enjoying the place we love. Which makes winter the perfect time since your in doors for so long!
If you’re pondering a winter family photo session – go for it!
I tapped Eunice Kim for her expertise in planning a winter family photo session. Here are some of her tips…
Winter Family Photo Session Tips
There are so many creative ways to have a session during the cold winter months. Here are just some of my top favorites.
• In-Home lifestyle session – having a photo session in the comforts of your own home. This is a great options for family with young children because they already feel safe in their own space.
• Rent a hotel room with a King bed – there are some amazing hotels in DC that have large windows and beautiful decor. This is a great option if you’re looking for something different from your own home. Your photographer should be able to help you find the one to fit your style.
• Rent a Airbnb – Want more than scenes than what a single bedroom can provide? Rent an Airbnb and make it a staycation!
• Museums – there are so many incredible museums with grand spaces.
Wherever the location, the subjects and connections are what make the photos!
What to wear for a Winter Family Photo Shoot
For our outfits, we were indoors so nothing too heavy or bulky. I love the winter palette of whites, grays and creams, so that was inspiration for our family looks.
I didn’t want things too matchy – just complimentary. This white dress looked so pretty against the paint colors in our home and I loved keeping the look casual by not wearing shoes. However, I was not about to out everyone in white!
This family photo shoot was about making everyone feel comfortable so they can smile for the camera…. Jeff wanted to wear jeans and Marielle needed to have a touch of pink to complete her look.
So I would recommend sticking to cool tones and embracing those winter whites! Think of cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudel, hehe.
I’m rounding up a few ideas to give you inspiration for your winter shoot. My last tip is that sometimes you can feel like your skin hasn’t seen the sun in a while. If you’re looking for a touch of glow, check out this post on self tanner and bronzers.
